About

I am Dershana. And,'Cooking for baby' records my experiences with feeding our little girl, Abhi, who loves variety in food, just like me ! Finding newer food options to keep her interested has been a challenge - sometimes exasperating but more often, exciting!

When, what, how to start feeds other than breast milk/formula? Too much or too little? Food options? Do I listen to the paediatrician who says not before 6 months or to my mom and mom in law who say why not as early as the second month??

Surfing the net for information and inspiration, I found very few sites that really appealed to my Indian food sensibilities. Of course baby food can be universalised but I also wanted recipes that took into consideration our traditional ingredients like candy sugar, jaggery, ragi(finger millet), black raisins, rice conjee and so on with their proven nutritional benefits.

Slowly through lots of trials, apprehension, goof ups and 'eureka situations' I've managed to come up with easy food options that with a little bit of effort any new mom can learn to make at home.

The one thing that all good baby care books and other educational resources reiterate is that good food habits are built in childhood (starting from babyhood and initiation to solid food). And, what you teach your baby to eat now will go a long way in determining her/his food preferences and choices in the long run.

I hope this site helps you and I would love to learn about your baby recipes too.

This blog is a work in progress, many more sections will be added from time to time. All suggestions are really welcome.
